I am watching the live cable cast of the forum this evening as I know many are. I was so disappointed to see channel interference which included large spikes, breaks, flicking video to black, audio pops and scratches.
PLEASE NOTE: the signal interference was not due to anything that WCCA TV did.
I phoned Charter and a tech did get back to me and said he would look into it and contact field techs. He cited INET interference.
I continue to monitor the channel as I write this.
We, along with others in our PEG community, have asked Charter, directly and through the City Manager's office, to address the deplorable INET configuration that currently exist which negatively impacts both WCCA TV 13 and the Government Channel 12. With the exception of Charter's tech response, which is usually rapid, nothing substantial has been done to address the situation. The signal has been without interruption for relatively a short time however the INET problem has been consistent for the past 11 years since the Government Channel launched. Both Channels 12 and 13 requested separate INET sub-carrier nodes, instead of having to share them. Surprisingly the City actually pays for the INET.
This is not rocket science. There is no legitimate reason why such a request has not been addressed and rectified. I understand that the city pays $495,000 for INET. That money should buy a service that meets the city's need. The "city" being all of us.
This begs many questions among them, is the question of WHO is monitoring Charter's compliance and accountability. Is someone enforcing the franchise contract with Charter when it comes to issues such as this? (Apparently not.). The major purpose of a cable franchise is to support community needs including its public access channels.
The many volunteers from both the Cultural Coalition and WCCA TV did a stand up job in producing the Candidate Forum, they DESERVE better. It is a real shame that Charter seems to care less and it seems that nothing is done about it. Lucky for Charter when they produce or present "public access like shows" on their channel it will, most likely, at least, be interference free.
I end this blog hoping for the best for the people we serve.
