Known as El Dia de los niños/El dia de los libros, or Children's Day/Book Day, this is a day to celebrate the joys and wonders of childhood and the importance of books in our lives. 05 / 6 Fifth Annual Worcester Walk-A-Thon To Cure Scleroderma Set For May 6 Start: 10:00 am The Fifth Annual Worcester Walk-A-Thon To Cure Scleroderma will take place from the Bancroft School on Sunday, May 6, 2007. Sign-in will begin at 10 a.m. in the Bancroft School Gymnasium, 110 Shore Drive, Worcester, and the 3.5-mile Walk around Indian Lake steps off at noon. Scleroderma is a chronic, often progressive, autoimmune disease. It literally means “hard skin” which can cause thickening and tightening of the skin, as well as causing damage to internal organs. It occurs about four times more often in women than in men, and also attacks children. Its cause is unknown, and presently there is no cure. Funds raised by the May 6 Walk will be used by the New England Chapter of the Scleroderma Foundation to help people with Scleroderma and their families cope with the disease through support programs, physician referrals, educational information and research. 05 / 12 Massachusetts Park Serve Day Start: 8:00 am End: 5:00 pm WHO: Volunteers from all corners of the state WHAT: Park Serve Day, sponsored by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs and Governor’s Public Liaison Office WHEN: May 12, all day WHERE: About 50 parks statewide, from the Berkshires to Cape Cod, including Moore State Park in Paxton and others in Worcester County. For a full list of parks and projects and to sign up go to www.mass.gov/parkserve WHY: To spruce up the state’s parks and beaches for spring. Pick up litter, clear trails, paint park buildings, clean beaches, plant flowers, and much more. Volunteers have signed up already, but many more are needed and welcome.
