Over 220 visual artists and crafters will be selling and displaying their works at stART on the Street '07: The Creative City, which will take place on Sunday, September 16 at our new time, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Park Avenue from Elm Street to Pleasant Street, Worcester, MA. Street performers will perform everything from African-Brazilian Capoeira demonstrations, a cappella groups, acoustic music, dance and many more genres of performance art throughout the exhibition area. Burncoat Baptist Church members and friends will begin the Worcester State College fall semester by preparing and serving a free lunch and dinner to students in the Campus Ambassadors (CA) Ministry House located behind Dowden Hall on Tuesday, September 18 at noon. The lunch will include trays of cold cut deli meats, rolls, salad, snacks, and a beverage. Dinner will then be served to students beginning at 5:30 PM with a menu consisting of Campus Ambassadors Ala Pete shrimp and sausage with roasted tomatoes, Campus Ambassador's shepherds pie, Campus Ambassador's vegetable rice, Campus Ambassador’s broccoli chicken and cheese (and other selections provided by church members and friends), a beverage and desserts. After dinner, a CA Multitude service will begin at 7:00 PM in the Student Center. CA is a Christian organization open to all Worcester State College students. Horizons for Homeless Children is seeking fun-loving, dependable people to interact and play with children living in family homeless shelters and domestic violence shelters throughout Central Massachusetts. A commitment of 2 hours a week is required for at least 6 months. Day and evening hours are available. Trainings are held regularly and are listed on our website. Ray McGinnis is a “psalm-enthusiast,” a man who delights in the spectrum of beauty and meaning in the ancient Psalms and in guiding people in the expression of their spirituality through writing. He travels internationally to share his enthusiasm with others, inviting them to “bring their whole heart, mind and spirit to the process.” A noted poet and teacher from Vancouver, British Columbia, McGinnis has taught more than 6,000 people how to write prayers, poetry, and autobiographies. He studied with Kathleen Adams, author of Journal to the Self, is a published poet, and has kept his own journal since 1981. He has more than twenty years of experience as a group facilitator and has led writing workshops in numerous settings including retreats, healthcare facilities, and professional and church groups. On October 11, McGinnis will lead “Writing the Sacred: A Psalm-Inspired Workshop” at United Congregational Church (UCC), 6 Institute Road. The evening will begin with refreshments at 6:30 p.m. and the workshop will follow from 7-9:30 p.m. A donation of $10 (or whatever participants are able to contribute) is requested and payable upon arrival. As part of its educational outreach efforts in conjunction with Earth Science Week, the S.O. Conte Anadromous Fish Research Center in Turners Falls, Massachusetts will have an Open House on Saturday, October 13, 2007 from 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. The Lab staff will set up demonstrations to present research work being performed at the Lab and in the field. Scientists will introduce the language of fishery resources such as threatened and endangered species, fish passage, anadromous species like salmon and shad, and catadromous species like eels. Visitors will see models of hydraulic flumes, weirs and the processes of monitoring experiments and collecting data. They will learn how dams and natural barriers effect the migration, fish passage, spawning and life cycles of fish. Scientists will explain how environment and river conditions create challenges for fish. It's free and all are welcome.
