MWDN profiles Mary Pauplis
Submitted by wccatv on May 6, 2008 - 11:11am.The Metrowest Daily News recently wrote about Mary Pauplis, host of "Cooking Adventures" and a longtime WCCA supporter.
Growing up as a child in Maynard, Pauplis spent every Saturday with her mother, two aunts, and her grandmother making pasta.
"We were just little children, so we could only do the little things, like straighten out the pasta," said Pauplis. "Finally, after asking to cook, my mom said OK, and gave me a little rolling pin, which I still have today."

"A fledgling business model for open-source animation and film"
Submitted by wccatv on May 1, 2008 - 1:42pm."Big Buck Bunny" is a ten-minute animated film made with the open source program Blender. It was funded by foundation support and pre-orders of the DVD. As part of this spirit of openness, the DVD contains all the source files for the project, and (after the pre-orders are filled) the movie will be available under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license, meaning anyone can remix it however they like.
Much more info at On the Commons and the project site.
The trailer:
Big Buck Bunny - Official Trailer from Andy Goralczyk on Vimeo.
This highlighting of free expression and downplaying of commercial concerns seems very much in the vein of what we do at WCCA. It would be great to see more community video projects make their source files available for others to use.
(BTW, I've got Blender running on my computer at WCCA, but I haven't the slightest idea where to start with it.)

The Dragon Sorcerer Play is a culmination of our school years worth of work at the Stone Soup Learning Coop. The students and staff researched knights and ninjas, learned about the literary concept of a quest and all it's elements, learned about CORI laws and reform, created a story line together, and then a student took the story line and wrote a wonderful play with it. Now we are building sets, making costumes, and rehearsing, so that we can give the performance of our lives. We'd really love for you to join as and share in the amazing work these students have accomplished this year.

Earned Income Tax Credit Coalition Volunteer Recognition
Worcester, MA—On Wednesday, April 30, 2008, the Worcester Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Coalition will celebrate its achievements and recognize 52 volunteers who provided free tax preparation and E-filing to income-eligible Worcester residents.
The City of Worcester and Worcester Community Action Council along with the listed Coaliton partners have been working for five years to ensure that eligible Worcester residents receive all tax credit for which they entitled and to maximize their tax refund. This year, the Coalition prepared over 900 tax returns, returning close to a million dollars to Worcester low to moderate income working families.
Approximately 10 to 15% of families who are eligible for EITC do not receive it. The goals of the Worcester Earned Income Tax Credit Coalition are to (1) ensure eligible households receive all tax credits for which they are entitled and to maximize their tax refund; and (2) through the assistance of trained volunteers, provide free tax preparation.
The event will be held at Plumley Village
16 Laurel Street, Worcester
4:30 to 5:30 P.M..
