New cable contract in "45-60 days"?

At last night's City Council meeting, Councilor Petty asked City Manager O'Brien when the city would have a new, long-term cable contract with Charter. The City Manager said he thought it would be within "45-60 days."

WCCA gets most of its funding via terms in the cable contract, and in 2007 has been unable to make any long-term committments with its financial future so unclear.

Why so Secret Shmecret

I think it is deplorable that the city administration keep things so secretive about this long over due franchise contract. A government that is supposed to be by the people should not be done behind closed doors. How could the chair of the PST committee or anyone, including you folks at WCCA not be informed about the status of the franchise contract? The city and of us citizens, have much to gain by ensuring WCCA TV has a bright future through the franchise contract. The city should be on top of this, many cities have great franchise to support their public access channel. There are many examples, available to the public, that encourage a healthy public access center like WCCA TV. We all know WCCA TV is a needed asset and the people are behind the station, why the city seems to be so secretive and in the closet about the negotiations is suspicious. It would have been nice to hear the manager give a more assuring and fuller answer.
