The Voice of Heard/Overdose of Emotion
A few weeks ago, I have read a few articles discussing the debate of autism and vaccination. To be more specific, an article about a mother whose son had died supposedly from vaccine shots and how that story is being told in a book titled Mother Warriors by Jenny McCarthy, a celebrity whose own son has autism. Mothers such as these believe that thimerosal, an inorganic mercury compound used in vaccines, cause autism. That belief had been debunked by the medical community. But there are still protests calling the medical and political systems' handling of the autism-vaccine issue "tobacco science".

This article discusses the whole science debate of the supposed link to the rise of autism and vaccines.

This is the article I have read that led me to consider writing this blog entry.

This article covers against a recent protest decrying a New Jersey policy that requires children to get vaccinated in order to enter preschool.
The whole issue of autism is a serious emotional one for parents everywhere. They are all desperate to find the cause of autism. If we end up persuading the officials to regulate the medical establishment with too much emotion, we are bound to be doing more harm than good for our children. Therefore, in order to understand the causes of autism, we should do so in the most logical way possible. The first step is to allow qualified scientists, who are doing the research on autism, to find the causes.

Autism and Vacines
Your right... The medical consultant for the Today Show was on this morning and she was saying the exact same thing that they have scientifically proven that there is no connection, but emotions around this are so high that people can't let it go. Her concern was that there are diseases that can start appearing again in our society as a result of this fear and that funding to help identify the real cause of autism will be delayed because people already think that they know it.
Thanks for your blog and resources.
great post
very cool to hear what an autistic person has to say about this issue. on top of that, i agree with you
Autism and vaccines
I, too, have heard and read about the accusations linking vaccine to autism. It is good that scientists have been able to refute this false information. It is sometimes difficult to sift out fact from fiction. Your advice to let qualified scientist find the causes is good and sensible.
