Charter Faces Lawsuits On All Sides
There has been much concern focused on the struggles of print media in this depressed economy. The TV business is not immune. WBZ closed it's Worcester office, Fox and CBS and others are sharing resources. There is much more reporter pooling going on today. What we will see is more of the same. The same stories, the more the spectacle the better. Commercial TV News, as in most radio outlets, are moving further from objective, local and hard hitting news in favor of "human interest", and the business of propaganda.
Charter Communications seems to facing some unique challenges on it's own.
For sure there will be some that will moan over the fact that Worcester has no affiliate TV station. In today's world , however, that is really a moot issue.
No other TV station has the depth and volume of Worcester as WCCA TV. WCCA members produce a tremendous amount of weekly programming. Programming that is perhaps more relevant and meaningful as what you would find in any other media venue anywhere else. Only, at least in terms of commercial TV and commercial radio, more locally originated.
During the ascertainment process community members argued the point that the city should do more to encourage the expansion of WCCA TV / public access so WCCA could place more facility, capacity and distribution for use by our citizens. We appreciate what Massachusetts current laws provide to support PUblic Access and community media, however more could be done. The smart move for local, state and federal legislators would have been to do more to encourage public access stations such as WCCA with funding, capital and resources ( broadband) needed to render long term sustainability to meet community media needs. In spite of the lack of aligning increased franchise provisions to meet community media needs through public access, WCCA is committed to growth so we could increase all of our community produced news outlets without being subservient to any multi-service provider ( cable or phone company). That were your help is needed. Consider making a donation to WCCA TV. Presently WCCA, in partnership with community members presents "Community Vision News", "Young Views Real News" ( Youth Produced News), Albanian Hour" ( Albanian News and More), Vietnamese News, and others, and it is all distributed WCCA TV channel 13 and on line through this website. We stand with our members, committed to continue these efforts. Now more than ever organizations, institutions, and individuals need affordable venue to outreach. That is were your public access TV station shines most. We have a saying here: WCCA TV is more than just a TV station, we are a community resource.
Our goal is not to profit, our goal is to empower and build community. We look to your participation, help and support to make that possible.
We hope local, state and federal leaders are paying attention is paying attention with public access / community media sustainability in mind.
