Teen Central runs youth news competition

This fall, WCCA TV13’s youth production program was asked to develop a Youth News and Communication Career Cluster by the Minority Achiever’s Program at the YMCA. Representatives from Teen Central developed a pilot format and presented their information to participants in the program this past October. Sixteen youth signed up for the program which began officially in November.

Members of Teen Central thought it would add some excitement if they divided the group into teams and let the teams each develop their own format and secure bragging rights if their format was chosen as the model for Youth News segment that would debut in 2007 as part of WCCA’s weekly news program, Community Vision as well as part of Teen Central, a program produced by the youth production team at the station.

The competition built quickly with each team working hard to not only learn new career skills but also build a winning news segment that was 3-5 minutes in length. To add to the excitement, each team would receive a last minute breaking news story that had to be added to their show. Two news professionals from the station agreed to judge the competition and give the young producers feedback on their final productions.

Submissions were sent to the judges last week and yesterday the teams learned the final results. The judges were impressed with their first attempts and each judge had a favorite team. The end result was a tie and some valuable lessons learned about effective communication and producing a quality news production. But the best news was that all the participants agreed to return after the holidays to continue to learn more about reporting news and to become the founding members of Teen Central’s first youth news team. Be sure to watch for their debut in WCCA’s Community Vision.

The Worcester ARTS Alliance will hold sTARTon the Street:2006 on September 17th from noon to 5 p.m. on Park Avenue from Elm Street to Pleasant Street. Visual artists and crafters of all mediums and experience are encouraged to participate. A main stage will be dedicated to showcasing live bands and street performers will be able to entertain attendees on the street. The deadline for registration is Friday, August 25th, and shortly after a list of artists attending will be available on their website.

What's the Big Green Bus? Stop by the Ecotarium on Saturday, August 26th and see what it's all about! The Big Green Bus is a school bus powered by a diesel engine that runs on recycled vegetable oil. A group of 12 students from Dartmouth who drive the bus will discuss current global energy issues and talk about the bus at 11 a.m. The Ecotarium is located at 222 Harrington Way. The New England Wildflower Society presents :"Rock on! Celebrating Stone in Garden" through October 15th. 37 Stone sculptures by top New England Artists can be seen in their 45 acre garden, located at 180 Hemenway Road in Framingham. As part of Rock On, they also present "Meadow Madness" On Saturday, August 26th and Sunday, August 27th from 1-4 p.m. Thousands of flowers will be in bloom and there will be ladybug releasing, as well as butterfly walks and beekeeping. Hey everyone, So, how was your week? Well,for us.... we had a one blast of a week. So much fun, like you wouldn't believe.

First of all, I want to thank Fidgi and Judy for doing an amazing job with the camp! That was great and you gyus are the BEST!!!

And also all the kids who attended the camp were great... I am glad that I got the chance to meet you all and got to know you.

And the best of all, Heather and I had the chance to film a modeling class from "Ovations". That was great and we had a blast!!!

Well, we also took some creative pictures of us after the filming.... I am sure one of these days we'll put it up for you to see. Yes... You got it! Where ever we are, it is a BLAST!!!

Union Station is not just a place for trains anymore! Stop by Union Station on Tuesday, August 8th at 11 a.m. for the grand opening celebration of the Union Station Bus Terminal. The new terminal includes five bus ports that will be serviced by three bus companies, who anticipate more than 200,000 passengers to be serviced there each year! The Union Station Bus Terminal is located at 2 Washington Square.

The Ecotarium is hosting Monty Alexander as the last performer in its Jazz at Sunset Concert Series. Alexander combines American Jazz with the rhythms of his own Jamaican roots for a sound that crosses cultures and genres. The New England Summer Nationals are in Worcester! From Thursday, June 29th to Sunday, July 2nd, you’ll have the chance to see over 5,000 hot rods and classic cars cruising around Worcester. There will also be drag racing, a 50’s style drive in, The New England Patriots Cheerleaders, and live music!

Asa Waters Senior, a descendant of those that served in George Washington’s Continental Army, will be honored Saturday, July 1st at the Asa Waters Mansion. Legend has it that Asa Waters used his mansion as a station on the Underground Railroad. The Sons of the American Revolution and the Daughters of the American Revolution will be on hand to help you see if your family tree dates back to the Revolution. This event is free and open to the public. The Asa Waters Mansion is located at 123 Elm Street in Millbury. For more information, call 908-391-0868.

Ralph’s Diner hosts Summer Scoot on Saturday July 1st and Sunday, July 2nd. Summer Scoot is a gathering of scooters, motorcycles, mopeds, classic cars, and more! There will be live music, rides, raffles, vendors, and even movies. Ralph’s Diner is located at 148 Grove Street.

Free Summer meals will be available for children in Worcester starting Monday, June 26th. Worcester sites, which include parks and community centers, will serve two meals a day Monday through Friday to children up to age 18.

Here's what's going on this week in the Community Calendar:

Drag out your poodle skirts and grease back your hair to twist and bop to 50's tribute Act Cathy's Clown on Saturday, June 10th. More than 50 songs will be played at the show, which will last from 7-11 p.m. Food and beverages will be available from 6-8 p.m. The show will be held at the Leicester Town Hall at Washburn Square. Tickets will be available at the door. You can save two dollars by bringing a food donation for the Leicester Food Bank.

Oak Hill CDC is holding it's 7th Annual Community Picnic on Saturday, June 10th. There will be food, beverages, games, entertainment, and visits from the Worcester Fire Department and Massachusetts State police. This fun filled event takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Banis park on the corner of Dorchester and Houghton Streets. For more information, call 508-754-2858.
