March 7, 2009 will be the 19th anniversary of a tragic fire that took placeat 21 Florence Street in which four people perished. Each year on March 7ththe Main South Alliance for Public Safety commemorates not only thisterrible disaster but all fire-related deaths since 1986. The large blackgranite memorial at 1020 Main Street will again be the site of this year'smemorial.In 1990, 28-year old Ethel Baisden and her three children - Francis, age 3;David, age 23 months; and Paul, age 7 months - died when flames sweptthrough their apartment at 21 Florence Street. The fire began when thebaby's blanket was ignited by a gas space heater.There are now 46 names inscribed on the monument. This year one name willbe added:George A.
