magical realism
Kelly Link and cable access TV
Submitted by Mike on August 3, 2007 - 9:44am.While about 98% of WCCA's shows are on a regular schedule, sometimes people submit one-off shows, and sometimes regular shows have a gap in their schedules, so maybe 2% of the time you see something unscheduled and completely surprising, whether an Elvis impersonator or a documentary about Darfur.
This unpredictability adds spice to WCCA, and I was reminded of it while reading Kelly Link's short story "Magic for Beginners":
The Library has been on television for two years now. It isn't a regularly scheduled program. Sometimes it's on two times in the same week, and then not on again for another couple of weeks. Often new episodes debut in the middle of the ight. There is a large online community who spend hours scanning channels; sending out alarms and false alarms; fans swap theories, tapes, files; write fanfic. Elizabeth has rigged up her computer to shout "Wake up, Elizabeth! The television is on fire!" when reliable Library watch-sites discover a new episode.
