Imagine Worcester #97 Dr Peter Gray

Virginia Swain is the host of Imagine Worcester and the World, your source for local and global interviews with peacemakers around the world. Virginia's guest is Dr. Peter Gray.
Children are designed, by natural selection, to spend endless amounts of time playing and exploring, with other children, without direction or interference from adults. That's how children learn to control their own lives, solve their own problems, and get along with others as equals. It is also how children discover and develop passionate interests. And, of course, it is a major source of children's joy. Increasingly, we have become a world in which children are no longer allowed to play and explore freely. Dr. Peter Gray is striving to do whatever he can to help restore that freedom to children. Dr. Gray, Author and Researcher, Boston College, research professor at Boston College, is a long-time advocate for educational reform and the renewal of free play for children. His research has shown how children are biologically designed to learn through self-directed play and exploration. He is author of Free to Learn: Why Unleashing the Instinct to Play Will Make Our Children Happier, More Self-Reliant, and Better Students for Life (Basic Books)
