WCCA TV Community Media and Television Studio facility at 415 Main Street is about to get a temporary face lift

WCCA TV is Getting a Newly Painted Façade in September. WCCA is also happy to announce that a possible longer term Transformation for the building is in it’s future

Worcester, MA. August 27, 2015: Worcester Community Cable Access, Inc. (WCCA TV) is soon going to have a nicer looking facade. On the week of September 14th, with generous funding support from The George F. and Sybil H. Fuller Foundation, WCCA TV will have the current façade concrete “accents” painted a greyish color with the letters WCCA TV placed across them. Time has worn the paint of the old concrete “accents” that many people driving in downtown Worcester, through many years, have used as a landmark for directions. When this paint job is completed, the “accents” will still be there, but we hope they will be more pleasing to the eye of the beholder, and they will be a means to help identify WCCA TV when drivers and pedestrians are in the vicinity.
The building at 415 Main Street was originally built in 1890 as a bank, and it went through significant changes in 1974 and a serious renovation in 1998 in order to accommodate WCCA TV and its move downtown. Since 1998, little of the building has changed at the WCCA TV facility. One thing that has changed is the slow weathering and deterioration of the façade. In 2014, it was necessary to make minor repairs and to have sidewalk scaffolding for the safety of pedestrians. These repairs were completed.

Currently, WCCA TV is performing a feasibility study on how to address needed upgrades and renovations to enhance the WCCA TV facility and downtown presence as well as improve conditions to better meet community media needs. What is clear to the architects, engineers, and leadership at WCCA TV is that the transformation of the building must and will be more than simply the renovation of a building for appearances; it will be a development that may change the social, cultural, and commercial dynamics of this part of Worcester. The results of this study are almost completed, and the planning process for how to raise the funds and implement the renovations has already begun.

It won’t be long before WCCA TV announces the new plans for what is being called, the WCCA TV iSMARTT Center (in-Studio Media Arts Resources Technology and Training Center), and the community members of Worcester will be able to see the vision behind this project. In the meantime, people will be able to see a better looking building façade by the end of September (The feasibility study has been provided by the Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund, a program of the State of Massachusetts administered through a collaborative arrangement between MassDevelopment and the Massachusetts Cultural Council as well as generous matching funds by the George F. and Sybil H. Fuller Foundation).

WCCA TV is a public access and community media center that has stood for media democracy, media literacy, and creative innovation since 1986.

Worcester Police Department (Official)

Goddard Memorial Drive ATV Accident Update

Worcester, MA (September 1, 2015) – The female passenger in the ATV accident that occurred on August 19, 2015 in the area of 51 Goddard Memorial Drive succumbed to her injuries early Sunday morning. On August 30, 2015 at approximately 1:50 AM, Ms. Paola Alba, 23-years-old of Worcester, died as a result of a head injury that she received while ridding as a passenger on an ATV.

The Worcester Police Crash Reconstruction Team was called to the scene to investigate this incident. During the investigation the operator of the ATV, Luis Pena, 24-years-old of Worcester was charged with Operating to Endanger (negligence), Operating at a Speed Greater than Reasonable, Unregistered Motor Vehicle and Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle.

Since the accident resulted in the death of Ms. Alba additional charges may be pending.

This investigation is ongoing.

Original Press Release:

On Wednesday August 19, 2015 at approximately 9:10 PM Worcester police received a report of a single ATV Crash in the area of 51 Goddard Memorial Drive. Upon arrival, officers attended to a 23-year-old female of Worcester who was unresponsive. The female was identified as the passenger in the ATV. The operator was identified as a 24-year-old male of Worcester. The male was suffering from non-life threatening injuries to his arm. The pair was rushed to a local hospital to be treated from their injuries.

The female passenger is currently listed in very critical condition. The male operator was treated and released.

The Accident Reconstruction Team was immediately called to the scene.

The preliminary investigation reveals that the ATV was traveling east on Goddard Memorial Drive when it flipped over in the right travel lane.

According to witnesses, a group of dirt bike and ATVs were traveling on Goddard Memorial Drive doing “wheelies” and swerving on the road. The witnesses reported seeing the ATV rollover approximately 5-6 times.

After the crash, the other riders stopped and got off their bikes and ATVs to view the accident, then returned to their vehicles and fled prior to police arrival.

Earlier in the evening, police were called the area of Orient Street and Hamilton Street for reports of ATVs and dirt bikes riding dangerously through the streets. Officers were unable to track down the group at the time. The Worcester Police Department has received numerous reports of similar activity over the past several weeks. Callers have stated that the group drives hazardously in all areas of the city disrupting traffic and putting residents in danger.

Officers have also been in contact with the Environmental Police to assist with the investigation.

Criminal charges against the operator of the ATV are pending. The investigation is ongoing.
