Scott Schaeffer-Duffy writes:
“The Saints Francis & Thérèse Catholic Worker community will be sponsoring a vigil today from 4- 5 PM at Lincoln Square, in Worcester to encourage Governor Baker to welcome Syrian refugees.

The terrible violence in Paris does not justify closing our doors to the innocent victims of war in Syria. The United States conducts a very thorough vetting of all refugees, a process that can last two years or more. We believe the decision of many governors to refuse to accept refugees is an overreaction to the Paris attacks. We believe that hospitality is our duty and in the interest of our country, which bears a heavy responsibility for the violence in the Middle East.”

Community Harvest Project Donates Apple to Worcester South High

CHP Highlights partnership with Worcester South High and raised funds to help donate apples to Thanksgiving meal
Worcester, MA – On Wednesday, November 18, Community Harvest Project (CHP) will joining Worcester South High School at their annual Thanksgiving Lunch – a special meal provided free through the school to all students just before Thanksgiving. This meal ensures that all South High students will be able to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal during the holiday season. CHP has donated apples to the kitchen staff to create a healthful seasonal dessert for each student and will be helping Principal Maureen Binienda serve the dish. Additionally, CHP will be distributing bags of apples to students unable to attend this meal, including those enrolled in the pre-school program for children with Autism and students in the Special Education Program.

Jodi Koeman, the Executive Director of Community Harvest Project says “CHP is thankful for the commitment of Worcester South High School’s incredible students and we feel honored to be part of their Thanksgiving meal.”

Community Harvest Project highlighted this partnership with Worcester South High School at their annual Harvest Home Festival & 5K, and raised funds from community members to distribute apples to South High. At South High School, 83% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch and through the 2010 Healthy and Hunger-Free Kids Act, all South High students have the option of receiving free breakfast and lunch at school.

Volunteerism is promoted by South High Principal Maureen Binienda, and all of her students volunteer at Community Harvest Project’s farm in North Grafton. In November 2014, Prospect Hill Farm, a 75 acre property with a 30 acre orchard in Harvard, was donated to CHP. Not only will this provide CHP opportunities to grow, but it also provides Principal Binienda a new volunteer experience to share with her students and an opportunity for South High to expand their Student Ambassadors program. Volunteering at Community Harvest Project gives students from an urban environment a hands on educational experience about how food is grown, a chance to strengthen relationships with teachers, and a place to work together and create new friendships. Principal Binienda says, “Everyone leaves feeling a huge sense of pride- faces are full of smiles- knowing what they did will make a difference in our community.”

About Community Harvest Project
Community Harvest Project (CHP), a 501(c)3 organization, is the only non-profit in the area dedicated to improving access to healthy foods through community engagement. Through their volunteer farming programs, education, and leadership programs and partnerships, they bring thousands of community members together each year to improve access to healthy foods for individuals and families in need across Worcester County. In 2014, thanks to 9,900 volunteer visitors, CHP grew and donated over 1.2 million servings of fruits and vegetables to individuals and families in our community who otherwise may not have access.
