American Cancer Society to Light Up New England on Black Friday

The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, an event that unites those who have been affected by cancer, has created a movement that will celebrate cancer survivors and remember those lost in a simple way during a time that can be especially tough for families who will be missing loved ones or worrying about loved ones currently fighting cancer.

Over Thanksgiving weekend, the American Cancer Society will be “Lighting up New England” in a visual tribute and reminder of loss, triumph and hope.

A luminaria is a bag, with a candle or glow stick inside it that is personalized, decorated, and lit in memory of someone lost to cancer, in honor of someone still fighting, or in special recognition of someone who has beaten the disease.

Community members will place these glowing tributes on their front porches, front steps, or at the end of their driveways, to honor those who have been touched by cancer, helping Light up New England at dusk Black Friday, Nov. 27. To learn more, please visit lightupne.org or find the event on Facebook.

Worcester Domino’s® and NFPA Partner with Worcester Fire Department to Promote Fire Safety
Local residents may receive free pizza for properly functioning smoke alarms

WORCESTER, Ma., Sept. 28, 2015 – Worcester Domino’s, located at 413A Park Ave., and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) are teaming up with the Worcester Fire Department to promote fire safety during Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 4 – 10). On Oct. 6 – 7 from 3 – 8 p.m., anyone who orders a Domino’s pizza may be randomly selected and surprised at the door when their pizza arrives aboard an F-250 fire truck. If the smoke alarms in the home are working, the pizza is free. If the smoke alarms are not working, the firefighters will replace the batteries.

“Fire safety is extremely important,” said Henry Askew, Worcester Domino’s franchise owner. “We’re very excited to partner with NFPA and the fire department for a program that not only promotes the safety of our friends and neighbors, but rewards those who make fire safety a priority.”

This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign theme is “Hear the Beep Where You Sleep: Every Bedroom Needs a Working Smoke Alarm.”

“Half of all home fire deaths result from fires reported between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., when most people are asleep,” said Worcester Fire Department Lt. Annie Pickett. “That’s why having a fully functioning smoke alarm in every bedroom is so important. Smoke alarms save lives.”

Customers can call Worcester Domino’s at 508-754-2236 to place their order and be eligible for the fire truck delivery.

Democrats Vote Unanmiously to Create A Court to Clear Title and Remedy Foreclosures

Saturday, September 19, 2015 – Thousands of Democratic Party delegates to the 2015 State Party Convention in Springfield passed a resolution for “ A Court to Clear Title and Remedy Foreclosures in This Ongoing Crisis” (see full text below).

“We had an overwhelming, positive support from Democrats – garnering 280 petition signatures and then sharing the resolution with Convention participants,” explained Bonnie MacCracken, Delegate from Amherst, NAACP member, and herself a title examiner, “I got involved in this effort because I see the damage to my neighbors and the damage in our property records, and it must be fixed to protect the integrity of our land records and the titles to all our homes. There must be justice and accountability.”

Retired federal prosecutor and Amherst delegate, Sarah McKee, elaborated, “Confronted with the many thousands of illegal foreclosures in Massachusetts, the loss of billions of dollars to our Commonwealth, and the need for swifter, fairer, and less costly access to justice for both foreclosed homeowners and post-foreclosure buyers, delegates saw a Court specifically for this purpose as the clear answer. Delegates’ overwhelming, unopposed endorsement is gratifying.”

“Senator Elizabeth Warren’s clarion call to hold banks accountable inspired us to challenge the wrongful and improper foreclosure of our home. We are grateful for the SJC decision that reversed our foreclosure, but obtaining justice was stressful and costly and has eluded thousands of others who have lost their homes in our Commonwealth, especially those on the margins. We are heartened that the Democratic State Convention wisely voted to endorse the establishment of a Foreclosure Review Court to more timely and effectively address our foreclosure crisis. We encourage our legislature and judicial leaders to move swiftly toward this goal,” Convention Delegates, Linda Pinti & Lesley Phillips.

For more information or to speak with homeowners or advocates, please contact MAAPL at 508-630-1686 or maaplinfo@yahoo.com.

(END)

Full text of Resolution:

“A Court to Clear Title and Remedy Foreclosures in this Ongoing Crisis

Whereas more than 68,000 Massachusetts homeowners have been foreclosed since 2005 and hardest hit have been homeowners of color and women targeted for predatory mortgages with high fees and interest rates and foreclosures have increased again substantially;

And whereas these foreclosures have pulled up to $40 billion out of the Mass. economy, mostly to “foreign” banks, destabilizing our neighborhoods and undermining municipal tax bases; the majority of these foreclosures being illegal, e.g., the foreclosing party did not own the mortgage;

And whereas illegal foreclosures cloud titles to foreclosed properties, jeopardizing the investment of anyone who later buys a foreclosed home;

And whereas these cases are complex and time-consuming, clogging the dockets of existing courts, and can require filing the same case in different venues to resolve the matter fully;

Therefore be it resolved that the 2015 State Convention of the Massachusetts Democratic Party supports establishing a statewide court venue to review foreclosures; to clear titles to illegally foreclosed homes more rapidly, fairly and at a lower cost to the Commonwealth; to restore foreclosed families to their homes where possible while ensuring that post-foreclosure purchasers recover all damages for being sold property with clouded titles; and this court will have a five year renewable term,

And be it further resolved that we affirm and support a bill to this effect, presently filed whose lead sponsors are the Honorable Senator Thomas McGee and Honorable Representative Aaron Vega,

And be it further resolved that this resolution be distributed to all appropriate media.”

– Passed September 19th, 2015, 2015 State Convention of Massachusetts Democratic Party

Visiting the WATER SHOPS: The Beating Heart of Armory Production

Springfield MA: Springfield Armory National Historic Site invites you to join Rangers Richard Colton and Susan Ashman discovering & rediscovering the Armory’s Water Shops in the upcoming program, The WATER SHOPS: The Beating Heart of Armory Production on Saturday, September 12th, 2015 at 1:00 pm. See & walk the historic grounds along the Mill River just south of the Armory’s Hill Shops where the National Historic Site & Museum now is. This Ranger-led program is FREE.
Your journey of discovery begins in the Museum’s theater with a half-hour slide show & orientation followed by a short one-mile drive (in your own vehicle) to meet at the present Water Shops and ending at the site of the older Lower Water Shop about a mile down the Mill River. Paper handouts with maps & images will be available.
Water power was essential to the Armory from the moment it was established in 1794. There, the heavy rough work of shaping the wooden gunstocks, iron barrels, and iron & steel components and bayonets were done. Shipped by wheeled vehicles up Walnut Street to the Hill Shops as mile away, the pieces shaped, new smaller iron & steel pieces forged & filed, and the muskets and rifles finished and stored in large Arsenals like the one the Museum is in. The Water Shops, though listed in the National Historic Register, were not included in the National Historic Site but were sold to private owners who maintain it as an industrial site with extensive industrial rental opportunities.

The Springfield Armory National Historic Site is the location of the nation’s first armory (1794 –1968) and was established by George Washington. The site includes historic grounds, buildings, and the world’s largest historic American military firearms collection. The park is open daily 9am – 5pm after Memorial Day until October 31st. There is ample parking and the event is wheelchair accessible. For further information and weather cancellation call (413) 734-8551 or check the website at www.nps.gov/spar
