On this episode of Tech Safe, host Cecelia Doucette welcomes WCCA TV's own Executive Director Mauro DePasquale, to discuss the vital need for Public-Access media and television that amplifies community and public voices without political censorship or corporate profiteering. They speak on how non-commercial public, education and government access (PEG) channels began via an act of Congress requiring telecom companies to allocate a percentage of their cable subscriptions to fund local independent TV stations, reimbursing communities for their use of public land and infrastructure. Finally, they address how shrinking cable subscribers are threatening the existence of Public-Access TV, while the telecom companies are able to turn their profits from internet subscriptions, which does not require any public reimbursement on their part.
